The u3a movement, founded in 1982, is a non-commercial national voluntary organisation which provides, through local u3as, life enhancing and life changing opportunities for people not in full-time employment. It does this within local u3as, giving its members the opportunity to develop interests, make new friends, and have fun. Thundersley u3a was formed in August 2013 and has capacity for 260 members. Thundersley is situated on the main A13 from London to Southend, and has a history going back to the Doomsday Book. Several historical buildings are still present in the neighbourhood.
